    Description:

     

    Thermocouple extension cable consists of conductors of the same nature as the elements of the thermocouple and which extends this to the thermocouples’ reference junction.

     

    Commonly there are four types of insulation material for extension cable: fiberglass, Teflon, PVC and silicone. Stainless steel braided and tinned brass braided is also commonly used in the cable. Customers from different areas possibly require different color style for the cable, all color standard are available upon request.

     

    Thermocouple and RTD extension cables are available in a variety of connector and jacket configurations to make connections between process and instrumentation easy. Omega offers straight wire as well as retractable TPE (thermoplastic elastomeric)cable style wire.

     

    Practical for use in connecting between a thermocouple sensor and a readout, extension wire comes in as large a variety as our thermocouple wire.

     

    Thermocouple Extension and Compensating Cables is often necessary to locate the cold junction of the thermocouple in a larger distance from the measuring point due to safety concerns or constructional reasons. For the connection between the two points, thermocouple extension and compensating cables are used.

    The application range for these cables is limited in most standards to a temperature of -25 °C (-13 °F) to +200 °C (+400 °F), or depends on the temperature resistance of the insulation material used.

    The insulation material is to be selected in order to fulfill the requirements at site concerning chemical and heat resistance, moisture protection and other technical requirements.

    Applications:

     

    Extension cable works by using the same metals as the thermocouple does. If it's the same or close on the thermoelectric series, you aren't creating new thermocouples at each junction, which is why copper doesn't work well with the most common TCs.

     

    Copper will work with copper/copper alloy. And the smart transmitter has cold junction compensation, It's all about only having one dissimilar junction at an unknown temp, and that's the temp being measured. If you know the temps of all the other dissimilar junctions by virtue of having them occur at the transmitter, you can simply sum in a voltage to cancel them out.

     

    The problems are almost always because there are extra dissimilar junctions which also generate voltage proportional to their temperature. If that temperature is different than the cjc temp, it can't compensate.
